DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - Authorities in southeast Alabama are looking for the headmaster of a defunct private academy who is accused of stealing money meant to pay the school’s debt.

Houston County sheriff’s officials have filed warrants for the arrest of former Ashford Academy headmaster Douglas John Bauer. He is charged with multiple counts of theft and possession of a forged instrument.

Ashford Academy closed in May 2015 amid declining enrollment and financial problems.

The school’s last board chairman, Bob Key, tells the Dothan Eagle (https://bit.ly/2iQlYpW ) the school is heavily in debt and he, Bauer and other board members have been making payments.

Key says Bauer was supposed to be collecting the money and paying the debt, but suspicions were raised when board members started getting delinquent notices.

Authorities are looking for Bauer.
