RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A Cary man will spend life behind bars for killing a night nurse at an apartment complex more than two years ago.

News outlets report 38-year-old Daniel Scott Remington pleaded guilty Tuesday to murder in the death of 58-year-old Wendy Jean Johnson of Sanford.

He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His plea allowed him to avoid the death penalty in the case.

Authorities said Remington shot Johnson in the parking lot of the Hyde Park Apartments in August 2014. At the time, she was on her way to help a client.

Court documents showed in 2014 that Remington admitted to shooting Johnson as he tried to rob her. She was found injured in the lot and taken to a hospital, where she later died.
