WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) - The Roman Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston says it is closing Bishop Donahue High School in McMechen.

The Diocese says in a news release that Bishop Donahue’s student population will be combined next fall with Wheeling Catholic High School, about 6 miles to the north.

Diocese schools superintendent Vincent de Paul Schmidt says Bishop Donahue says declining population in the area and other demographic factors contributed to the decision.

He says Bishop Donahue had a freshman class enrollment of just 15 students. He says the significant resources dedicated to two high schools within close proximity led to the “fiscally and academically responsible” decision.
