NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City woman has pleaded guilty in the beating death of her 2-year-old daughter.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown says Ashley Diaz of Far Rockaway faces 17 years in prison when she’s sentenced on Feb. 1.

Kevasia (kuh-VAY’-zhuh) Edwards had massive injuries, new and old, when she died in February 2014.

Kevasia and her four brothers had been placed in foster care then returned to their mother. Therapists and social workers told a judge that Diaz’s parenting skills had improved.

Reforms were undertaken after the deaths of Kevasia and other children who’d been involved in the child-welfare system.

Diaz pleaded guilty to manslaughter and assault.
