RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A special election will be held to fill state Sen. Jennifer L. McClellan’s former seat in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Media outlets report House Speaker William J. Howell issued a writ of election Wednesday for the 71st District seat. The seat opened after McClellan won a seat in the state Senate in a special election Jan. 10. The special election will be held Feb. 7.

The 71st House District includes downtown Richmond, the city’s North Side and part of Henrico county.

McClellan on Wednesday endorsed Richmond school board member Jeff Bourne, a Democrat, for the delegate seat.

The deadline to file as a candidate is Jan. 24 at 5 p.m. If multiple candidates run as Democrats, the party would go through a nominating process before the special election.
