LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Las Cruces police say an officer cut by a knife-wielding fugitive fatally shot the man in a shopping center parking lot after a foot pursuit.
Police say officers and a U.S. Marshals Service agent were trying to apprehend 29-year-old Jeremy Lopez-Robledo of Las Cruces when he was shot Tuesday.
According to police, the officer was slashed on his right hand, and police say the wound wasn’t life-threatening.
Police said the Marshals Service was seeking Robledo for violating terms of his probation and that he had a history of aggression toward police and was known to carry a deadly weapon.
A multi-agency task force will investigate the shooting. The officer was placed on standard temporary administrative leave.
Lopez-Robledo was added to a list of the state’s most wanted fugitives on Monday.
