CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - Suffolk County is revitalizing its Juvenile Drug Treatment Court this month to address the transgressions of young, nonviolent offenders whose criminal acts can be linked to drug addiction.
Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/2jwbrOJ ) the juvenile drug court is a special judicial arena within the Long Island county’s Family Court. It will gather once a week in the Family Court building in Central Islip.
C. Randall Hinrichs, district administrative judge of the Suffolk County Courts, authorized the renewal of the specialty court after it was disbanded about five years ago following an uptick in adult drug-related cases.
Family Court Supervising Judge Theresa Whelan says the court is expected to handle between 15 and 20 cases at a time.
Philip Goglas will be the court’s presiding judge when it reconvenes.
