Oregon gives schools some flexibility on lost snow days

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Oregon school districts won’t have to make up for every instructional hour lost to snow this winter.

The Oregon State Board of Education decided Thursday to give districts some flexibility, allowing them to write-off up to 14 hours of state-required instructional time.

Ice storms and unusually heavy snowfalls affected much of the state in December and January. Oregon’s largest district, Portland Public Schools, canceled nine days of classes and might cut spring break to make up for lost time.

Oregon schools chief Salam Noor says it will be up to each district to come up with a plan to make up as much lost class time as possible.
