FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A federal lawsuit alleging a man’s civil rights were violated when he was physically abused while being held in the Washington County jail three years ago has been settled or $185,000.
The man’s guardian had sued Sheriff Tim Helder and a number of jailers in federal court over the alleged treatment.
Helder told the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (https://bit.ly/2jIbRS1 ) he agreed to settle, but only with a statement saying his office did nothing wrong.
Helder says no employee was fired or reprimanded as a result of the incident.
The lawsuit stemmed from a 2013 case involving a pre-trial detainee who was held at the jail on a charge of terroristic threatening, which was later dropped.
The man alleged he was beaten and cut with a razor blade while in custody.
