PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Authorities say a man showing off his AR-15 rifle to friends at a Lunar New Year celebration accidentally fired the weapon, killing his friend.

Washington County Sheriff’s Sgt. David Thompson said Friday that the 28-year-old man had unloaded the .223-caliber rifle to show to four guests and was reloading it when it fired and hit a 20-year-old man in the stomach.

The man was pronounced dead at Oregon Health & Sciences University Hospital. No charges have been filed.

Thompson says it doesn’t appear that alcohol or drugs played any role in the shooting.

The names of the victim and the gun owner are not being released.

Authorities are still trying to notify the victim’s family because they live overseas.
