EASLEY, S.C. (AP) - A sixth grader in Pickens County has died after being hospitalized with bacterial meningitis.

School district officials tell local media outlets they were notified Monday that a student at R.H. Gettys Middle School had died.

District spokesman John Eby says the school is working with the Department of Health and Environmental control to take precautions regarding the illness. Crews are also cleaning areas and surfaces in the Easley school that the child may have touched.

A letter went home with students notifying families of the situation, but officials are not recommending that other students get treatment at this time.

Eby says grief counselors are available to help students cope with the death.
