WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) - Trial has begun for a former Pennsylvania police officer and constable charged with criminal homicide in the shooting death of his daughter’s ex-boyfriend.

Sixty-nine-year-old James Bongiorni is charged in Washington County in the April 2016 death of 38-year-old Brian Wilbert in Burgettstown, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Pittsburgh. His trial began Tuesday morning.

Defense attorneys argue that Bongiorni acted in self-defense, saying Wilbert had a knife and an extensive criminal history.

A teenage neighbor who filmed the heated exchange from an upstairs window testified that she heard Bongiorni saying, “Don’t do it, Brian. Don’t do it.”

Prosecutors plan to present testimony about a previous confrontation between the men in which they allege that Bongiorni threatened Wilbert.
