DELAND, Fla. (AP) - A Florida truck driver was killed after stopping to help a South Carolina family whose car crashed after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on Interstate 95.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports 59-year-old Efrain Merced saw a car on its side after it hit a guardrail in the highway median early Tuesday. He pulled over onto the highway shoulder and was then struck by 24-year-old Christopher Doobs of New Jersey as he tried to assist two adults and two children in the car.

The accident began when a car was trying to pass 40-year-old driver Rodrine Buffaloe of Simpsonville, South Carolina, and clipped her bumper. The car drove off as Buffaloe’s car veered off the highway.

Buffaloe, her husband, Leon, 46, and their children ages 6 and 5 survived the crash with minor injuries.
