PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A former Providence College basketball player and former volunteer coach at Brown University has faced a judge on a statutory rape warrant.

Abdul Abdullah appeared in a Kent County courtroom Wednesday after authorities say he violated his probation. WPRI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2umrAPJ ) Abdullah pleaded guilty to statutory rape in 2005 in Georgia and moved back to Rhode Island after serving a six-month sentence.

Prosecutors argue there is no record he had permission to leave and not report to his probation officer. Abdullah was arrested Monday after a traffic stop revealed an outstanding warrant from 2006.

His attorney says while the warrant is active, Abdullah’s probation has ended. Abdullah’s family was in court for the hearing, saying Abdullah thought the case was closed and had no idea there was an active warrant.
