MACON, Ga. (AP) - A truck driver from the Atlanta area is facing vehicular homicide charges for his involvement in a wreck on I-16 near Macon that killed three people.

Media outlets report that 49-year-old Gerard Lawrence Thompson Sr. was arrested Tuesday, shortly after the multi-vehicle crash.

Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones says those killed in the eight-car pileup were 81-year-old Marjorie Jones, 84-year-old Robert Day and an unidentified third decedent.

Six people remain hospitalized with injuries from the crash.

Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Linda Howard says the wreck happened at about 5:30 p.m. They say Thompson, who was driving a tractor-trailer, started the pileup by crashing into a pickup truck and a Chevy Cobalt. The pickup then crashed into a smaller car, causing a fire.

It’s unclear if Thompson has an attorney.
