MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - A man who fatally shot another man in downtown Medford has been sentenced to life in prison after a jury convicted him of murder.
A Jackson County judge sentenced Shane Zornes immediately after Thursday’s nighttime verdict. The Mail Tribune reports (https://is.gd/Xo2nUD ) Zornes broke down in tears after the verdict and apologized before sentencing.
Closing arguments earlier Thursday revolved around whether Zornes intended to kill 27-year-old Isaac Deleon on Dec. 13, 2015. The defense asked the jury to consider a manslaughter charge, saying Zornes made a tragic decision to de-escalate a situation by pulling the gun from his waistband and clicking off the safety to show he was serious.
But prosecutor Jeremy Markiewicz described Zornes as “an adrenaline-pumped, angry, tough guy walking around downtown Medford.”
Zornes can apply for parole after 25 years.
