FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina sheriff’s deputy says someone shot at him as he mowed his lawn, and a search is underway for his assailant.

The Cumberland County Sheriff Office said the deputy saw the driver of an SUV point a long-barreled gun at him on Thursday evening and fire a shot.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Sean Swain said the deputy chased the SUV in his patrol car. The driver and a passenger got out of the SUV and fled, but the passenger returned and surrendered to deputies.

A .22-caliber handgun was found inside the SUV.

Swain said James Gibbons faces several charges, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He’s jailed on a $25,000 bond.

The driver of the SUV remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.
