CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Tennessee man has been sentenced to five years in prison in the 2013 boating death of a woman.

The Leaf Chronicle reports 27-year-old Douglas Wayne Jackson was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty in May to reckless homicide in the death of 21-year-old Stephanie Burns.

Arrest warrants state Jackson and Burns were boating on the Cumberland River with friends when he pushed Burns and another friend, Aaron Skylar Santoyo, overboard. Burns’ fiancé told Jackson to turn around, saying Burns couldn’t swim well. Jackson turned his boat at an angle, and ran over Burns and Santoyo.

Assistant District Attorney Robert Nash says Burns sustained fatal chopping and slashing injuries. Santoyo was struck in the head and critically injured.

A toxicology report says Jackson had synthetic drugs and alcohol in his system.
