RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - The family of a Riverside County jail inmate killed by another inmate in a fight over soup has filed a $6 million claim against the county.
The Press-Enterprise reports Wednesday (https://bit.ly/2ubQL60 ) that the claim alleges Pedro Sepulveda died due to a lack of proper oversight by guards and poor medical care.
A lawsuit can be filed if the county rejects the claim.
The 27-year-old Sepulveda got into a fight in January at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning. He fell, hit his head, lapsed into a coma and later was declared brain dead.
A sheriff’s official told The Press-Enterprise that the county doesn’t comment on pending litigation.
Three other county inmates have died in custody this year, all from medical emergencies rather than foul play.
