CARMEL, Ind. (AP) - A nonprofit in central Indiana has been named a cultural affiliate of the Grammy Museum.

The affiliation gives the Carmel-based Great American Songbook Foundation access to the museum’s exhibitions, education initiatives, research programs, internship opportunities and technical support, the Indianapolis Business Journal (https://bit.ly/2tttVbC ) reported. The foundation will also get opportunities to collaborate with the museum and promote their work.

“This stamp of approval from the Grammy Museum, which is the hallmark of American popular music, provides an undeniable boost to any future plans we might undertake,” wrote Chris Lewis, the foundation’s executive director, in an email. “Certainly, we will look to them as a resource and a partner as we weigh the options for a free-standing museum.”

Four other organizations have similar affiliations with the Los Angeles-based museum. They include the Bob Marley Museum in Jamaica, the National Blues Museum in Missouri, the Woody Guthrie Center in Oklahoma and The Beatles Story in England.

The foundation was established in 2007 with a mission to preserve and curate artifacts of creators, performers and publishers. It has more than 100,000 documents related to pop, jazz, Broadway and Hollywood music.

“There are a few things we look for in partnerships,” said Bob Santelli, executive director of the Grammy Museum. “One is passion for American music, which is here in spades. Second is a very deep-seated and committed educational set of initiatives that aren’t just dreams but are actually in place. The third is the ability to understand the big picture of American Music.”

He said the foundation exceeded the Grammy Museum’s criteria for affiliation.
