BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Police in Connecticut say a 10-year-old girl will require several surgeries after she helped save a 7-year-old boy from a pit bull attack.

Police spokeswoman Rowena White says the two children were playing at a home in Bridgeport when the dog bit the boy in the buttocks.

White says the boy was able to free himself from the dog, and he ran toward an open first floor window to escape. The girl went to grab the dog’s harness as the boy ran, which is when the dog started to attack her.

White says the girl suffered cuts to her legs, head and stomach.

Animal Control has the dog in custody. Police are currently searching for the dog’s owner, who is the girl’s uncle.
