GLOUCESTER POINT, Va. (AP) - The Coast Guard says it has suspended the search for a 13-year-old who went missing while swimming with family members in Virginia.

The Coast Guard said in a statement that the search for the missing teen was suspended at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Coast Guard says its search covered 44 square miles over a 13-hour period.

The Coast Guard says the teen was swimming with family members at Gloucester Point Beach Friday afternoon when he was reported missing.

Capt. Rick Wester said in a statement that the decision to suspend a search is “a difficult one” and that the Coast Guard’s sympathies are with the boy’s family.
