JAMESTOWN, R.I. (AP) - A museum in Rhode Island is working with a Jamestown resident to establish an endowment to maintain the historic Beavertail Lighthouse.

Resident Jim Buttrick has agreed to match every donation up to $500,000 made to the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum Associations - creating a potential $1 million endowment. The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/2uQqefI ) the effort has raised about $200,000 so far, with an expected additional $200,000 from pledges.

The endowment will be solely dedicated to the maintenance and upkeep of the lighthouse located at the southern end of Conanicut Island.

Buttrick says he loves old buildings and wants to save the lighthouse since it’s one of the oldest of its kind in the country.

The fundraiser has a deadline to raise all money by the end of the year.
