GRAND TERRACE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities have shot and killed gunman they say barricaded himself in a Southern California home, riddled neighboring homes with bullets and opened fire on sheriff’s deputies.

Twenty-six-year-old Michael Fitzgerald died at a hospital Thursday after the confrontation at a home in Grand Terrace in San Bernardino County.

Authorities say reports of gunfire from a home sent deputies to the scene.

SWAT was called in, nearby homes were evacuated and sharpshooters were positioned on rooftops near the home.

Authorities say during a nearly two-hour standoff, they tried unsuccessfully to negotiate with Fitzgerald. He went in and out of the home and at one point was hit by non-lethal ammunition.

The Sheriff’s Department says he finally was shot after opening fire on deputies.
