CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Three members of a West Virginia board have resigned after a decision to temporarily suspend the license of a Putnam County funeral home over its business practices.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports the seven-member state Board of Funeral Examiners voted 4-3 in mid-July to suspend the funeral director license of Chad Harding for six months. Hardin owns The Harding Group, which includes Gatens-Harding Funeral Home in Poca.

The three members who voted against the temporary suspension resigned, including board president Ira Handley, secretary John H. Taylor and board member Bill Davis. Handley and Davis said they wanted a harsher penalty.

In February, the state attorney general’s office settled a complaint alleging Gatens-Harding Funeral Home violated state law by cashing in on pre-need funeral contracts before the customers’ deaths.
