SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a married Pennsylvania couple to jail for stealing more than $67,000 from a woman the wife was a caregiver for.

The Scranton Times-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2utKTDg ) that Kristen Munley-Wheatley and husband Corey Wheatley were sentenced Wednesday to six to 18 months in jail after pleading guilty to theft.

Munley-Wheatley was the caregiver for 69-year-old Mary Nicholas before she died in August 2015.

Investigators say that Munley-Wheatley forged 77 checks to herself for about $50,000 and also charged $8,000 on Nichols’ credit cards. Corey Wheatley took nearly $10,000 in cash advances from Nichols’ card.

Wheatley says it was dumb and he wished he never did it. Munley-Wheatley told Lackawanna County President Judge Michael Barrasse that she accepts responsibility.

The pair must also repay the stolen money.
