PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Providence School Board has ordered all administrators in the school system to be retrained following the mishandling of abuse allegations against an elementary school gym teacher.

The decision came after an emergency meeting held Wednesday night following the arrest of a teacher at Harry Kizirian Elementary School. The teacher has been charged with child molestation after three female students reported he touched them inappropriately.

State law requires anyone who suspects a child has been the victim of sexual abuse to report it to the Department of Children, Youth and Families. However, school officials failed to notify both the agency and police about the allegations.

Providence School Board President Nicholas Hemond tells the Providence Journal the school officials’ actions were “a total lapse in common sense.”
