COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say DNA left behind by a burglar helped link him to the killing of a South Carolina homeowner who interrupted his crime.

Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook said at a news conference Tuesday that 23-year-old Bouvia Sales also shot at the man’s son but missed after they came back to their Columbia home early April 8 while Sales was stealing a flat screen TV and other items.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says 43-year-old Marlin Butler was shot several times.

Holbrook says crime investigators found Sales’ DNA at the home. He wouldn’t say on what item the genetic material was found.

Sales is charged with murder. He is being held at the Lexington County jail on an unrelated domestic violence charge. It wasn’t known if he had an attorney.
