MILBRIDGE, Maine (AP) - A Maine kayaker whose mayday broadcast sparked an 18-hour search says he made it to safety and didn’t know the U.S. Coast Guard was looking for him.

The mayday call by Adrian Cerezo after his kayak was swamped by a wave Wednesday prompted a search covering 400 square miles. In the meantime, he swam to an island with his kayak, and then paddled back to Petit Manan Point near Petit Manan Island.

The Portland Press Herald reported that Cerezo was identified by an officer with Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife who recognized his voice.

Cerezo said his radio was disabled by seawater, and he was unsure whether anyone heard his mayday. He survived in the cold water because he was wearing a wetsuit.
