CLAY, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say they have removed 11 malnourished cats and two dead cats from a filthy, garbage-strewn home in central New York.

Onondaga County sheriff’s deputies went to a house in the town of Clay on Saturday to investigate a report of animal cruelty.

The sheriff’s office says the floors of the house were covered with garbage and cat feces. The officers say one of the dead cats was found floating in the flooded basement.

Sixty-four-year-old Jane Richards faces charges of animal cruelty and failure to give proper sustenance.

Richards was released on a desk appearance ticket and has a court date next month. It’s not clear if she has an attorney who could speak for her.
