WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - An eastern Minnesota woman who lost her husband to Lou Gehrig’s disease earlier this month is facing another hurdle.

Tessie Sylvester, of West St. Paul, has been diagnosed with cancer, KARE-TV reported (https://kare11.tv/2s93cjG ). She and her husband, 44-year-old John Sylvester, knew she had cancer, but she received the details about its severity on the day he died.

“He said, ‘I just want you here, because today is the day,’” Tessie Sylvester said. “I was holding his hand and he took his last breath.”

She received the details of her diagnosis later that day.

“I called the funeral home and my other line was beeping and it was the doctor’s office for me,” she said. “And that is when they told me. It was a cancer and we needed to get going quick.”

Doctors said the cancer spread to her liver and lymph nodes, which eliminates the option of surgery.

Sylvester, 36, has two sons, 6-year-old Gus and 5-year-old Freddy. She is expected to begin chemotherapy on Tuesday.

“I just want to hold my boys and lay down and cry but we keep going,” she said. She

A fundraising campaign on the site GoFundMe has been created to help the family cover medical bills. As of Monday, more than $170,000 had been raised.
