OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a DNA profile match has identified a man whose skeletal remains were found in a remote wooded area in 2015.

The Opelika-Auburn News reports 35-year-old Jeffery Michael Sharritt was identified Monday. FBI examinations linked Sharritt with the remains.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones says Sharritt was last seen in 2014 but was never reported missing.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that property owners found the remains and contacted authorities in September 2015. Authorities say it appears the remains had been at the location for some time.

Jones says Sharritt’s death is being ruled a homicide. Further details of how he died have not been released.
