WELLFORD, S.C. (AP) - Officials say a South Carolina man died while trying to outrun police officers.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger tells local media that 53-year-old Jackson Edge was pronounced dead at 12:01 a.m. Sunday at Spartanburg Medical Center.

Wellford police Chief David Green says two officers responded to a report of a disturbance Saturday night at an assisted living facility. He says a man at the scene, later identified as Edge, ran away as officers approached him. A chase ensued.

As the officers detained Edge he fell unconscious. Green says the officers performed CPR, but Edge was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The State Law Enforcement Division is now investigating the incident. An autopsy was performed Monday, and the Coroner’s Office is waiting for toxicology results.
