CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina couple is accused of abusing their infant son after tests revealed bone fractures all over his body.

Arrest documents show Ashley Joyner and Joshua Colter of Johns Island are each charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.

According to affidavits, the two-month-old boy was taken to a Charleston hospital May 7 with a swollen leg. The child was transferred to another hospital for a skeletal survey, which revealed 16 fractures in different stages of healing, including to the ribs, arms, legs and wrist. Lab tests showed no evidence of bone disease.

Doctors told the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office the fractures were caused by twisting and pulling, not from accidental falls.

The child was placed in emergency care with the Department of Social Services.
