NEW CITY, N.Y. (AP) - Two people are dead following a two-car accident that shut down a New York state highway near New City.

Clarkstown Police Lt. Glenn Cummings says he is unable to provide additional details on what led to the accident, only saying the vehicles suffered extensive damage.

The occupants of one of the vehicles were pronounced dead after Sunday night’s crash, one at the scene and the other en route to the hospital.

The Journal News reports (https://lohud.us/2suR6Ok ) the other driver suffered cuts to his head and is currently being held at a local hospital. The driver’s condition was not made available.

Clarkstown police are conducting an investigation.
