ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Harold Holzer, one of the nation’s leading experts on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, will receive an award that has been bestowed on two famous actors and several prominent historians.

New York state officials announced Tuesday that Holzer will receive the 2017 Empire State Archives and History Award from the New York State Archives Partnership Trust at New York City’s Cooper Union on Sept. 6.

The award recognizes “outstanding contributions by a national figure to advance the understanding and uses of history in society.” Previous recipients include actors Sam Waterson and Richard Dreyfuss; historians Doris Kearns Goodwin, Henry Louis Gates Jr., James McPherson, Robert Caro and Ron Chernow; and documentary filmmaker Ken Burns.

Holzer, the author or editor of 52 books, is director of the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College in Manhattan.
