NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) - Fire officials say nine people were taken to the hospital after a pre-dawn fire at a New Britain apartment building.

Two of those were reportedly seriously injured.

Capt. Michael Berry says firefighters responded to the 10-unit building at about 3:20 a.m. Friday.

They arrived to find heavy fire and people trapped in two units. Three people were rescued from one unit while six people were rescued from a second unit. Some of them were children. The fire damage was limited largely to those two units.

A frozen fire hydrant caused a brief delay in getting water on the fire, but firefighters were able to put it out within 45 minutes.

The cause remains under investigation.
