AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) - The Latest on the arrest of a man accused of shooting at an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper (all times local):

5:30 p.m.

Avondale police have released the name of the man accused of shooting at an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper.

They say 29-year-old Luis Aldana was taken into custody Thursday afternoon in north Phoenix near Interstate 17 and the Loop 303.

That was about three hours after Aldana was stopped in Avondale for having a vehicle with windows tinted too dark.

He allegedly opened fire at a DPS trooper, who wasn’t injured.

But the trooper returned the gunfire and police say Aldana was wounded before fleeing the scene.

Authorities say Aldana is in stable condition at a Phoenix-area hospital where he’s being treated for a gunshot wound in the upper torso.

It’s not immediately known if he has a criminal record.

Authorities say a man accused of shooting at a state trooper in Avondale has been arrested in north Phoenix.

Phoenix police say the unidentified suspect was taken into custody near Interstate 17 around 12:40 p.m. Thursday, nearly three hours after exchanging gunfire with the Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper.

The 11-year department veteran escaped unharmed, but authorities say the suspect was wounded and has been taken to a Phoenix-area hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

DPS officials say the suspect’s vehicle was stopped in Avondale shortly before 10 a.m. for having windows tinted too dark.

They say the trooper was fired at and a bullet struck his marked DPS vehicle.

He returned fire and wounded the suspect, who fled the scene in another vehicle that started an hours-long search.

10:20 a.m.

An Avondale Police Department spokesman says a suspect is at large after shooting at an Arizona state trooper who was not injured.

Office Jaret Redfearn says details of the incident Thursday morning remain unclear, including how many shots were fired, whether the trooper returned fire and how the trooper came in contact with the person.

Redfearn says the shooting occurred in the vicinity of Westview High School and Garden Lakes Elementary School and that schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution.

However, Redfearn says the incident occurred on a street and not immediately adjacent to either school.

Avondale is a Phoenix suburb on the metro area’s west side.
