NORTH MERRICK, N.Y. (AP) - Police on Long Island have arrested a man who they say punched a state trooper after crashing his car into a backyard.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/2nFY7Nm) that the 26-year-old Amityville man crashed his car on Southern State Parkway in North Merrick and landed upside down in a backyard around 9:45 a.m. Monday. Police say the man then ran around the yard trying to get out.

Officials say a state trooper entered the yard and asked if the man was OK when the man punched him in the eye. Police say the suspect was eventually subdued by the trooper and three residents.

The trooper and driver were both taken to the hospital.

The man faces several charges including assault on a police officer and driving while ability impaired by drugs.
