Lt. Cmdr. Eli Rosenberger may never live this down at work, but at least he made off with a few grand for his trouble.

Attempting to answer a military-themed clue on Monday’s edition of “Jeopardy!” — in his dress blues nonetheless — the naval officer incorrectly guessed that the U.S. Marine Corps was established on Oct. 13, 1775. That’s actually the “birthday” of the U.S. Navy.

The U.S. Marine Corps was established by the Second Continental Congress less than a month later on Nov. 10, 1775.

Mr. Rosenberger, who, according to the Navy Times is assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron 137 at Whidbey Island in Washington, went on to place second in Monday’s contest. He took home a $2,000 consolation prize, according to the game show’s website.

You can watch the video at the Navy Times website here.

Mr. Rosenberger can also take solace in another game show contestant making an arguably sillier error recently.

According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, on Tuesday edition of “Wheel of Fortune,” a contestant named Kevin flubbed a puzzle when he guessed the one missing letter in a puzzle — “A Streetcar Na_ed Desire” — was a “k.” It was, in fact, “m.”
