MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - State wildlife officials are proposing a total of 80 bulls-only permits for the October moose hunting seasons.

WCAX-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2mNzdaT ) the state Fish and Wildlife Department issued its recommendation last week.

The 80 permits represent a decrease of more than 50 percent from last year when 165 permits were approved.

A series of public meetings are planned this month on the proposal. The permits will be set next month.

Biologists say the drop is meant to allow the herd to grow.

Vermont’s archery-only moose hunting season is scheduled for Oct. 1-7.

The regular moose season is scheduled for Oct. 21-26.
