PHOENIX (AP) - Republican Secretary of State Michele Reagan will have at least one primary challenger next year for Arizona’s second highest office.

Republican state Sen. Steve Montenegro announced Thursday that he’s seeking the seat Reagan won in 2014. Montenegro campaign consultant Constantin Querard says Reagan’s job performance has left the office vulnerable to Democratic takeover.

Democratic Sen. Katie Hobbs has already announced she will seek the seat and Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton in considering running in the Democratic primary.

Reagan has already created a committee for a 2018 re-election campaign.

The secretary of state’s office oversees elections and performs lesser-known functions such as registering trade names.

Arizona doesn’t have a lieutenant governor, so the secretary of state is first in line to become governor if there’s a midterm opening.
