DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - A longtime District Court judge will join the North Carolina House to serve out a two-year term in the seat recently held for more than 25 years by the late Rep. Paul Luebke.

Durham County Democratic activists chose Judge Marcia Morey for the 30th District seat. Local media outlets reported Morey received a majority of votes from party leaders within the district Thursday night. Five were nominated for the seat. Gov. Roy Cooper is now obligated by state law to appoint Morey.

Luebke died in October but his name was on the fall ballot. Democrats picked Durham attorney Philip Lehman in November to fill the seat temporarily. Lehman resigned from the legislature on Thursday.

Morey has been heavily involved in reforms regarding young offender issues.
