MASON, Mich. (AP) - Ingham County’s sheriff is apologizing for record keeping problems that led to the dismissal of more than 70 cases.
Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth apologized Friday for the problems in the department’s evidence room dating back to 2010, when his father was Ingham County’s sheriff.
Gene Wriggelsworth stepped down last year after 30 years as sheriff. His son was elected to succeed him.
The Michigan Public Radio Network reports (https://bit.ly/2oq2tp2 ) Scott Wriggelsworth says the “chain of evidence” is incomplete in about 1,700 cases, including more than 500 drug-related cases.
He says the top reason for the record problems is that “some quartermasters just didn’t care.”
Those problems have resulted in the dismissal of 77 cases, including 22 felony cases.
The Michigan State Police is investigating whether any criminal laws have been broken.
