BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The sister of a suspect in a recent Vermont stabbing says he has a long history of mental illness.

The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/2mWgldo) that Rose Fortier Sauray says her brother, Louis Fortier, has been admitted to the hospital several times this year.

The 36-year-old Fortier is suspected of killing Richard Medina, with a knife during an altercation on Burlington, Vermont’s Church Street on Wednesday.

Sauray said Fortier has a history of throwing out his medication and that he should have been hospitalized.

Fortier was charged with first-degree murder by State’s Attorney Sarah George on Thursday. He has pleaded not guilty.
