While it is one of the sleekest looking SUV’s I have driven in sometime, the BMW is still first and foremost all about luxury. Since you sit a bit higher you get a good look at what is going on around you on the road. Even if you are in what the BMW folks call a coupe. Considered a luxury SUV even if a bit non-traditional, you can still count on superior design, creature comforts and a sturdy performance under the hood.

New for 2017 on the BMW X4 options that have been added include wireless phone charging and Wi-Fi hotspots. The M Sport package has been given a new optional steering wheel design too.

Competition in this segment includes the Jaguar F-Pace, Porsche Macan GTS and the Mercedes-Benz GLC43 AMG Coupe.

There are two trim levels on this five passenger four-door SUV, faux coupe. Both trims correspond to what is under the hood on either the xDrive28i to the M40i.

On the X4 xDrive28i, you get 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive xenon headlights, LED running lights and fog lights. There are also adaptive LED taillights, automatic wipers, and dimming as well as power-folding mirrors and sunroof. There is a power liftgate, rear parking sensors, eight-way power front seats and vinyl upholstery with a leather-wrapped steering wheel. In the back the 40/20/40-split folding rear seat gives more room if needed. The Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity is included as is the BMW Assist iDrive electronics interface and a USB port and auxiliary jack.

On the X4 xDrive28i, there are several package options including the Premium package with a sensor on the liftgate, leather upholstery and a front seat power lumbar control. There is also the M Sport package with 19-or-20-inch wheels, a body kit, sport seat in the front and a sporty steering wheel. The Driver Assistance package offers a rearview camera and front parking sensors.

For the M40i, you get the optional packages from the xDrive28i as standard as well as the front parking sensors, but the rearview camera is an option that has to be added. For both trims, there are also the Cold Weather package and a Lighting package if you want the extra bells and whistles.

Other stand-alone additions are heated front seats, a driver-adjustable suspension and automated parking.

Under the hood, both trims are all-wheel drive with an eight-speed automatic transmission. For the 2017 BMW X4 xDrive28i you get a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that with 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque.

For the M40i, you get a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 good with 360 horsepower and 343 pound feet of torque.

The 2017 BMW X4 comes with front-seat side and full-length side curtain airbags, antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, rear parking sensors and active head restraints. There is also the BMW Assist eCall with automatic collision notification.

Additional packages add more safety features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning and forward collision mitigation system with automatic braking.

Inside the BMW X4, you feel like you are in a thoroughly modern cockpit and ready to go. It’s comfortable with all the right detail to design. There is a center console for a sportier vibe and the front seats are nice and snug.

For passengers in the back seat, this is not the best situation for taller folks. With the coupe design the sloped roof cuts into the comfort back there. Another smaller than needed part of the BMW M4 is the trunk space. It is 17.7 cubic feet behind the seats when all seats are in use. When you fold the back seats down you do a little better with 49.4 cubic feet.

If you are considering this as an SUV in name only and don’t have to do a considerable amount of hauling, this BMW is fine. It is also all fine behind the wheel. Either trim has performance quality, the M40i really knocking it out of the ballpark in high-performance.

Final answer, for front passenger comfort, performance and a sexy design the 2017 BMW X4 is a hit all around.

Should You Need to Know: On the 2017 BMW X4 M40i the BMW folks are touting zero to 60 in about 4.7 seconds.

Miles: For the 2017 BMW X4 M40i I drove, it was 19 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway.

Cost: For the 2017 BMW X4 M40i I drove, the price tag came in at $67,495.
