NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Dozens of residents are without housing in Newark after their landlord failed to pay the $17,000 water bill.

WABC-TV in New York reports (https://7ny.tv/2pr85Dy ) city officials had to shutter the building at 98 Clinton Avenue after the landlord failed to pay. The building was also cited for a number of violations, including bad plumbing and raw waste stored in the basement.

The mayor’s office is trying to help residents find housing but many tenants were squatters and have no rent receipts.

There are two liens against the property with fines totaling about $300,000, and the owner is due in court on May 17.
