LEWISBURG, W.Va. (AP) - A West Virginia woman has been sentenced to the maximum 40 years in prison in the death of a 6-year-old boy in her care.

April D. Fox of Bellburn was sentenced in Greenbrier County Circuit Court of child abuse resulting in death. A special judge also ordered her to serve 20 years of intensive supervision upon her release.

Prosecutors said Fox beat James Shane Yancey and intentionally withheld food and water from him. He also was diagnosed with salt poisoning. He died in February 2015.

Fox did not address the court at her sentencing Friday.

State Police Trooper J.W. Gilkeson, who investigated the case, says Fox was in a relationship with the boy’s grandfather, and that custody had been given to Fox through an agreement with the child’s mother.
