Sen. John Cornyn took himself out of the running to be FBI director, saying Tuesday that he’d rather remain in Congress, where he’s the No. 2 Republican in the upper chamber.

“Now more than ever the country needs a well-credentialed, independent FBI director,” the Texas Republican said. “I’ve informed the administration that I’m committed to helping them find such an individual, and that the best way I can serve is continuing to fight for a conservative agenda in the U.S. Senate.”

On Monday Rep. Trey Gowdy took himself out of the search, narrowing the field of persons President Trump is looking at.

Mr. Cornyn was reportedly part of a group of job interviews last week.
