NEW YORK (AP) - Police in New York City say two people have been arrested after defrauding two elderly women out of nearly $600,000.

The suspects, a 29-year-old man and 26-year-old woman living in Guttenberg, New Jersey, were charged last week in federal court in Brooklyn with wire and bank fraud.

The Daily News reports (https://nydn.us/2rlmb63 ) the suspects ran a fraud scam targeting elderly people who were told they had won a lottery or sweepstakes and needed to provide financial information or money to get their winnings.

One of the victims, a 77-year-old woman, ended up losing her house. The other victim was a 91-year-old woman who was swindled during the last four months of her life.

Police say the 26-year-old suspect used the stolen funds to buy expensive designer shoes and modeled them on Instagram.
